Television viewing habits (in your country and around the world) NOW

I will start talking about the television viewing in my country because I know more about it. In fact, in Tunisia it s impossible to get a life without television, and even the fact that we don t really have local programs or dramas but we still spending a lot of time on watching TV. Now each family in my country can afford a satellite witch able it to watch other channels which have a lot of dramas and unfortunately Tunisian people are addicted with watching dramas.

Concerning television viewing habits around the world, those habits know a decline those days, in fact, because of the internet, less and less people spend time on watching TV this is mainly because now we can watch all music types, the majority of the programs and even whatever we want on the internet.

Furthermore, using the spare time has changed now for example we can play a lot of games using the internet or going out or even travelling that s what made watching TV less “popular” . For example according to a BBC statistic’s 40% of Europeans people said they are spending less time watching TV.

Television viewing habits (in your country and around the world)

IN THE LAST TWENTY YEARS

Between last 20 years and now a big change has been accrued. In my country 20 years ago only very few family used to have a television in their home, so the viewing habits of it was very rare. People were mainly interested in listening to the radio or in reading news paper and no s much of people had heard about the television.

Around the world, means pf entertainment were very few, and TV was one of the most important one, that s why, people were more interested in watching TV that days than now.

Positive/negative effects of TV on our lives

Positive

  • Interesting programs which make us up dated
  • Keep informed
  • Get information and a lot of knowledge
  • Watching movie at home so saving money
  • Can watch foreign channel
  • Show us some realities (for example concerning the war in Iraq)
  • We can learn some languages due to the TV
  • Enjoy our time on staying at home

Negative

· Damage our eyes

· Does not show us the truth

· Lost of time

· Rude programs specially for children

· we can t really sponsorship the programs

· There are so many channels that we can t focus on only one and watch the whole program

TV = reality? (Is TV a mirror to society)

The principal aim of the TV is to attract the biggest number of audience without carrying about how to do it. For me, the TV is supposed to be the mirror of the society but it doesn’t. We rarely see programs speaking about the true life of people or treating some real problems that ordinary people can have. In fact, we rarely can see that.

How much does TV influence our lives?

TV has a big influence on our life by those ways:

  • When we watch a serial and we want to do like the hero ( by wearing the same clothes or trying some gestures that he does)
  • By buying clothes or foods because of the add saw in TV
  • When we spend a lot of time on watching it and we negligee some other more important problems
  • When we become jealous from one post TV for example

TV's influence on consumer behaviour

TV’s has a lot of influence on consumer behaviour because the fact that we can see the product attracts us as a consumer, in fact, the consumer is not supposed to know the products and the add shown through the TV will make the product known. So if it s well shown the consumer will like it and try to buy it, other wise it wouldn’t t.

TV's influence on young women's body image

Because of the advertise done by the TV, women are buying a lot of unhealthy products because they think that they can help them on losing weight but unfortunately they keep trying without results.

Also, women are always trying to have the same body of the post TV or actress for that, they become addicted to unhealthy foods that the TV advertise and usually they become keeping a bad mood because they are not happy with their body.

Television stereotypes

Stereotypes can negatively influence our life or positively

Negatively:

· When people who watch them base their opinion on them life that they see on the TV

· When they try to do exactly like them

· When they become jealous and this affects their ordinary life

· When a husband for example hates his wife because she doesn’t t look like a stereotypes

Positively

When the children try to follow a good example of them.

Media literacy: what is it? How can it be taught? Should it be taught?

Media Literacy provides tools which make people able to criticize and analyse programs watched or heard. In fact, media literacy is the process of accessing, analyzing, evaluating and creating messages in a wide variety of media modes, genres and forms.

It could be taught at the University as an optional subject for those studying something different from the Media or like a main subject for those studying journalism.

I think that it should be taught because by that people get more awareness of misrepresentation and can understand more the role of the mass media.

What is the purpose of TV?

  • Enjoy people who are witching
  • Make people up dated
  • Keep people informed

The future of the TV

I think that TV doesn t have a real future, and that is essentially because of the big concurrence that we see for example Internet I don t think that TV would have as popularity as it used to have.
